How to distinguish the material of a magnet?

We know that there are various materials of magnets. If you have a sample at hand and need to order or process it, how to identify its material and convey our requirements? To distinguish the material of a magnet, you can use the following methods:

1. When using a magnet to absorb objects, observe the adsorption force of the magnet. Generally speaking, the adsorption force of NdFeB magnet will be relatively strong, while the adsorption force of ferrite magnet is relatively weak.

2. Observe the appearance of the magnet. Magnets of different materials also have some differences in appearance. For example, bonded NdFeB magnets are usually black (with a flat or glossy coating), while ferrite magnets are gray or brown (uncoated). Sintered NdFeB magnets are usually silver in color. (with electroplating on the surface)

3. Use a precision balance to measure the single weight and density of the magnet by the drainage method. Injection molded ferrite: about 3.8g/cm3; sintered ferrite: 3.8g/cm3; bonded NdFeB magnets 5.7-6.2g/cm3; sintered NdFeB magnets 7.5g/cm3; samarium cobalt permanent magnet 8.4g/cm3

4. Use a Flux meter or gauss meter to test the magnetic field strength of the magnet. Magnets of different materials also have different magnetic field strengths. Generally speaking, the magnetic field strength of NdFeB magnets is higher than ferrite magnets. According to the size of the magnet, the magnetic field strength of ferrite magnets can be mostly 0~1300Gauss, and the magnetic field strength of NdFeB magnets is usually 1500~5000Gauss.

It should be noted that the material of the magnet may affect its performance and use, and the price difference of magnets of different materials is also obvious. Therefore, when choosing a magnet, it is necessary to choose a magnet of the corresponding material according to the specific usage scenario and needs.
